The One About Luck

Diligence is the mother of good luck. – Benjamin Franklin

I have said it many times before that one of the biggest benefits to writing this blog is that as I try and find inspiration on what to write, I need to live in the present; I need to live my life to the fullest. Everyday I am observing my life and what is going around it. The outcome from this is that I find therapy in the small things of everyday life, I am no longer consumed by worrying about the future or regretting the past. Simply put, living in the now and writing my thoughts and observations down have been the most important pieces of comfort I have ever received.

Anyways, onto this week’s thought.

Last week, I traveled with my small family to Quebec City, Quebec to attend a Rolling Stones concert. This was a big thing for use as we would be bringing our son to his first ever “mega” concert. We were also very excited to see the Stones again as it had been 10 years ago that we had seen them. That was one of our favorite concerts to date, so to be able to see them “close” to home once again was going to be a treat. Yes, it had been 10 years since that landmark concert came to my hometown and I can’t believe how fast those 10 years have passed.

While I was waiting for the sub-par opening acts to do their thing; I got to thinking about all the wonderful and not-so wonderful things that have happened in my life in the past decade of my life. Of course I didn’t dwell on the bad things that had happened as that would only put myself into a bad frame of mind, but I did recall and remained focused on all of the great things.

As I was watched Chase play in the grass near my feet I noticed something; a four leaf clover was proudly sticking up from the other clover. I was really amazed by the discovery, I had never seen a real four leaf clover before. “This was my lucky day!” I thought to myself. Then I returned to my original thoughts from the past and began to realize. I have been ultra lucky during this past decade. I have my health, I have a great wife, I have a healthy and happy son, I have a safe home, I have a great job, I have a bunch of supporting and inspirational people in my life and I have the freedom to do a lot of the great things that life has to offer. I am a very lucky man!

Unlike most people, I look at this four leaf clover as the symbol of the good luck that I have had and not a symbol of the luck that is to come. Good luck comes to those of us who work hard and put care into the decisions we make in their lives. Whenever we can remove barriers that will give us an unfavorable outcome, then we can achieve the result we are after and this find luck. Sure, there are times of great challenge that creep into our lives that appear to be bad luck; it is how we overcome those challenges that will determine if that bad luck will turn into good luck. Although it may not feel like it at the time, we are in control of our destiny, we are in control of our lives, we control our luck. So get out there and get lucky!
